Beyond Today

Sometime in the year, 2022, I happened to walk down a major walkway of a University campus–my alma mater precisely. Before my sight were crowds of people, pitched to several corners, waiting to celebrate or already felicitating with some graduands of the institution’s Humanities programmes at that time.

It occurred to me, in a moment I suppose, that those were folks who had concluded their first major phase and rounded off, of course, all attendant obligations, assignments, and almost every order of duty college life had staked their way. I felt quite deeply that each one was now leaving behind his or her past deeds, as erstwhile students–worthy or not–on the sand of time.

Then there was the priceless reminder of the very fact that we shall all be called to account someday when life is over. Everyone of us must give a faultless statement of how we have spent every bit of time graciously allotted to us by God, as students, businessmen, professionals, leaders, parents, full-time ministers etc.–if we truly spent them (WELL) on the things that are able to outlast us.

As a matter of exhortation, I have to add, in all humbleness, that, seeing those families, friends, and loved ones from different places throng around that set of people to rejoice with them was pretty enlivening; but there’s just more to God-centred fulfilment than the ordinary eye can catch.

And by that, I mean, no amount of “Owambe” (an informal language for “Partying” in Yoruba parlance) can heal a soul with a scarred conscience accruing from a life history that did not count for any much significance–a life that did not live beyond today.

My little introspection that afternoon didn’t stop there. The Spirit of God must have also reminded me that, only a life for and service to the cause of Jesus Christ Who gave us HIS LIFE to redeem and offer us eternal hope; the seeds and strides of diligent labours and compassion for others, and the footprints of exemplary living are our breads of investment for tomorrow’s summer.

And this is a sound call to all and sundry–to AWAKE!

Our deeds in time are precious and follow us beyond the cemeteries of this world. If they are truly pleasing to God, Scripture says, “...in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” (Galatians 6:9). Contrarily, it does imply that we had only been unprofitable to God all along, and Scripture also says, “...cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 25:30).

This particular post is not a treatment of the subject of ‘divine judgement’. But I can afford to inform you, dear reader, that, ‘weeping and teeth-gnashing’ in biblical context are symbolic of pain, anguish and regret; and they happen here and hereafter.

Let us think over our ways, repent of sin and unfaithfulness where necessary, pray unto God for His mercy and help, and resolve permanently to live the rest of our lives beyond the now.

Grace.. 🕊️
